How to Determine the Electrical Resistance of Copper
Most metals are known for their high electrical conductivity. This property is less likely found in other solid materials but metals. Copper is among the most conductive metals found. It is used in various applications, such as major component of power lines and electronic wirings. However, this metal still has a certain degree of resistance. It is of tremendous importance to know the resistance of a metal to understand how to improve its conductivity.
Resistance is often mistaken with resistivity, which is another property of a material common to non-metals. Copper can conduct electricity simply because it has low resistance to electricity. Resistance is the measure of the ability of a material to stop the passage of electric current. This is different from the resistivity in that resistivity is the measure of the ability of a material to stop the passage of electric current with respect to its geometrical dimension.
To measure the resistance of a copper sheet, the geometrical dimensions of a given piece can be used as factors. The length, width and thickness of a copper sheet should be determined prior to the determination of a constant value of the resistivity of copper. Measure these dimensions using any measuring device like ruler or tape measure. Use a longer measuring tool for a bigger sample.
However the resulting value of resistivity of all
copper sheets
processed by a single machine can be determined even by using a small sample. Taking note of the length, width and thickness, multiply the width and the thickness to obtain the cross-sectional area of the sheet. This value is the division of the resistivity and length when multiplied.
The resistivity of copper is 1.72 x 10^-8 ohmmeters. This value is constant and is used in determining the resistance of any copper-based products, such as
copper sheets
for machinery covering, except those alloyed with other metals. Multiply this value with the length of the sample to obtain the dividend of the simple formula for determining resistance.
Since resistivity is directly proportional to the cross-sectional area of the copper sheet and inversely proportional to its length with resistance as a constant, resistance is equal to the product of the length and the resistivity divided by the cross-sectional area.
