How You Can Make Your Own Healthy, Low-cost Japanese Bento

Well, with the right ingredients and a good, easy recipe, you can be well on your way to creating your own home cooked Japanese bento. A traditional Japanese bento is a single-portion meal of rice, meat or fish, and some cooked or pickled vegetables usually packed into a box-shaped container. Packing a Japan bento box can help you both save money and eat healthy. The first thing you’ll need is your Japan bento box. A Japan bento box is usually shallow and has compartments to keep food separate during travel, this however is not a requirement and single compartment containers will do just as well. Bento boxes can be bought at Asian groceries or online.Next thing you’ll need will be the contents. There are many Japanese recipes that are both simple and healthy that you can use for this. Traditional Japan bento box consists of 4 parts rice, 3 parts protein, 2 parts vegetables and 1 part dessert. Colors of the food packed are also important and you should try having white, yellow, green, red or orange, and black. White is the rice. Yellow is often egg yolk. Green is vegetables. Red and orange are tomatoes, squash and salmon. Black is usually nori but can be substituted for purple (eggplant) or brown (cooked meat).In packing your Japan bento box, the traditional process involves filling half the container with rice, a quarter with your choice of protein, and the last quarter with your vegetables and dessert and, if needed, a sauce container. You can be flexible with your bento though, combining the different parts as can be done with noodles or sandwiches.One easy Japanese recipe is the sushi roll. You’ll need sticky Japanese rice, a bamboo rolling mat, a sheet of nori, and your choice of filling, which can include mangoes, cucumber and crabmeat as used in California Maki. Cut this into small pieces place in your Japanese bento.Another option for protein in a Japanese bento is gyoza. Gyoza is fried or steamed Japanese dumplings filled with a mix of minced meat and vegetables. Other Japanese recipes for your bento box can include dishes such as karaage, tempura, sukiyaki or teriyaki. Karaage is a variant of American fried chicken. The meat is first marinated, for as little as an hour or as long as overnight, in soy sauce with garlic or ginger. Then the chicken is coated in flour and fried in oil. Other meats can also be used in place of chicken.Tempura can be any sort of deep-fried food, often shrimp, squid and vegetables such as carrots, potatoes, and green bell peppers.Sukiyaki is traditionally made with beef. It is cooked in a Frying Pan with vegetables, soy sauce, and sugar.Teriyaki is usually made with chicken but can also be made with fried tofu or meat substitutes. The preparation involves cutting the chicken into small pieces, sautéing them until brown and adding teriyaki sauce. Teriyaki sauce can be made in two minutes – just mix soy sauce, mirin, sake, and sugar in a Frying Pan on low heat until the sugar dissolves.
