Foul Bay, Such a Perfect Beach for Boogie Boarding

Barbados has an abundance of fantastic beaches and as much as I like lazing about on a sun longer, or on a beach blanket I get a little bit bored after about an hour or so. I may be close to 40 years old, but I have no intention of slowing down or allowing myself to slowly waste away.

Since I  moved to Barbados near the end of June I have discovered a fun water sport that I get a wee buzz out of called boogie boarding. A boogie board is basically a 3 foot long board, which is made out of polyethylene, which you lye down on and ride the waves into the shore.

I first tried boogie boarding last year when I was staying at the Southern Palms, down at St Lawrence Gap in Barbados. But the waves on the Caribbean Sea were a little bit too gentle to really get much of a buzz out of boogie boarding; they were fine for little kids.

I had spent the first part of the day working hard from about 7am until 3pm. There is no point in escaping the rat race of Scotland, if you don't spend some quality time enjoying what Barbados has got to offer. So, myself, wife, our Staffie, and a couple of kids headed to Foul Bay, which is a beautiful little beach on the Southeast coast of the Island.

Foul Bay is easy enough if to find, there is even a road sign, which tells you where to turn off to reach it. There is also good parking at foul bay, picnic tables, a toilet and a shower. What I like best about Foul Bay is that you only have to walk for about 1 minute or less, from your car and you are on a beautiful beach, which I have very rarely seen with more than a handful of people on it at one time.

I had only been in the water for about 5 minutes and was having a lot of fun body surfing the waves, there were some real big rough waves. The waves produced by the Atlantic Ocean at Foul Bay were way too rough for the kids to use their boogie boards, so I ended up with one of the redundant boards.

Now thanks to the mighty Atlantic Ocean I'm now hooked on boogie boarding, I was totally amazed at the speed that I was propelled along the water at, even though half the time I would end up tossed up in the air like a rag doll. I got a real adrenalin rush from the riding the waves at high speed, what a difference it was compared to the previous years efforts at the Southern Palms.

Even my pet Staffie tried to do a bit of boogie boarding, as I was riding a wave into the shore, she grabbed hold the front of the board trying to drag it ashore. Unfortunately she took a chunk out of the board and cut my thumb, the board now looks as if a shark has bitten it. I think she is probably the first Staffordshire Bull Terrier boogie boarder that Barbados has ever seen.

Boogie boarding really is great fun and is a great break from just lazing around on the sand or swimming in the sea. Maybe one of these days I will be ready to attempt some advanced boogie boarding ticks or techniques.

Living in Barbados makes me feel alive and no more so than when I am at a beautiful near deserted, pristine beach, boogie boarding and enjoying the sunshine. Foul Bay in Barbados really is a wonderful beach, but I wouldn't recommend going too far into the water unless you are a very strong swimmer, because the waves and currents are a wee bit strong and rough.
